PS3 Folding@Home
There is a great new way to utilize your PS3 when you are not gaming on it. It is a project called Folding@Home in which you donate your PS3 processing power to "fold" proteins for some very important research. The Folding@home project was started in 2000, but is brand new for PS3 owners. The benefits of this are really quite amazing. Folding proteins can help to better understand many diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, BSE (mad cow disease), Cancer, Huntington's Disease, Cystic Fibrosis and other aggregation related diseases. As of March 30, 2007, 49 scientific research papers have been published using the project's work.
The reason this is such a great opportunity for PS3 owners to contribute is that with the advanced technology of Cell processing, PS3's can fold proteins 20 times faster than a personal computer can. How cool is that!? There has also been talks of other companies wanting to utilize our PS3 cell processors for similar projects, in which PS3 owners may be rewarded in some way.
I just thought people should be aware of this opportunity, and how you can really contribute to a great cause.
There is also a PS3 team over at www.ps3forums.com which you can join to fold with. They are just now joining the ranks of the top 200 teams in the world, and are moving up strong. Head to this thread below to see how to join.
